The Holbrook Community Foundation has just completed rebuilding Holbrook’s wharf and snack bar. We used recycled products and energy efficient design in the reconstruction work. Demolition and construction began last October and was completed in May in time for the 2009 summer season. Now Holbrook’s has a brand new, sparkling kitchen and handicap accessible snack bar, and there are three new commercial fishing bays with truck access on the wharf.
The newest addition to the Cundy's Harbor fishing fleet, the Ruth & Pat, will soon be unloading at Holbrook’s wharf. This 95' purse seiner fishes off the shores of Casco Bay, and as far south as New Jersey. She will be off-loading her fresh catch of herring or pogeys directly into bait trucks parked on the new cement truck run. A de-watering box will allow the excess gurry to go back into the fish hold, thus keeping the harbor clean. These bait fish are critical to the success of our local lobster industry. Visitors will be able to witness the working waterfront up close.
In the next issue of the Anchor, the Holbrook Community Foundation will announce a celebration to be held on July 19 on the wharf. Save the date.
